Access Dinghies at Burghfield Sailing For Disabled – 3rd May 06
Access sailors on 3rd May 2006

26 sailors of the Access fleet met for their second TT and Southern Championships.
Race Officers Simon Smith and Andrew Leigh set out 3 races, the day was overcast with variable wind speeds 8-15. All gathered enjoying bacon butties and mugs of tea, eager and excited.

In race 1 Ann Lewis in her Access 2.3 took a comfortable lead throughout. Mike Shewen held 2nd place for lap one, however ran aground on lap two giving way to Colin Cavanagh who took 2nd and Simon Jackson 3rd. Philip Wright took lead of the 303 fleet in lap two, David Harris came 2nd closely followed by Daniel Gallaford and crew Brian Grimwood. After close battles in the new Buddy Assist fleet Maureen Aldridge and Richard Smallwood achieved a 1st with Ron Sawford and David Stewart taking 2nd.

Due to light winds the Race Officers decided to change the windward mark for race 2. A port bias start line was set which surprisingly very few took advantage of. Ann Lewis (2.3) started the wrong end of the start line resulting in a loss of 70yards, giving Pat Jackson (2.3) the lead, however Lewis rapidly regained and made the windward mark first. Owing to wind changes positions within the fleet changed quite often therefore the race never turned into a procession, with surprising results. Janet Lee (2.3) made progress throughout the race and stole 1st from Lewis, who took 2nd, and Jackson 3rd. After a late start in race 1 Dave Durston (Liberty) was on the start line eager to start battle and succeeded in bring his Liberty home 1st followed by the leader of race 1 Pete Bission.

Lewis (2.3) took an early lead in race 3 leaving Jackson and Lee fighting for 2nd and 3rd place but after a tactical race from both, Lee was taken at the last mark giving a well earned 2nd place to Jackson. Durston (Liberty) again proved himself by having another clear win. In the 303 class Harris who had a definite lead in both laps took 1st, after close racing with the remainder of the fleet Gallaford and Grimwood achieved another 2nd , and after not much success in race 1 and 2, Bill Mitchell (303sport) gave a exceptional performance and took 3nd. In the Buddy assist Aldridge and Smallwood scored a hat trick taking their 3rd win of the day and Dave Stewart and Diane Faulks 2nd.

ADA UK Vice Chairman Pete Bisson congratulated all on a wonderful and successful days sailing and presented the Trophies.

The next TT will be held at Northampton SC Saturday 20th May 06
